predefinito Some important news about sustainability

    CLIMATE POLICY AND WORLD SUSTAINABILITY
Will the ambitious climate targets proposed at the G8 meeting in l’Aquila and discussed at COP15 in Copenhagen make the world more sustainable? A global climate policy may lead to strong reductions of greenhouse gases, but it may also entail large costs and lower investments in education, wealth, or research and development. While the discussion on climate policy costs focus on GDP losses or monetary measures, Carlo Carraro, Elisa Lanzi and Ramiro Parrado introduce a new element in the discussion by combining economic, social, and environmental indicators onto a unique measure of sustainability, the FEEM Sustainability Index (FEEMSI), an innovative index which allows projecting sustainability indicators in the future. FEEMSI is able to summarize current and future sustainability performances for 40 countries up to the year 2020, and the effect of a stringent climate policy on sustainability is not straightforward

ADAPTATION AND ITS SOCIAL AND BEHAVIOURAL LIMITS
Even considering that some mitigation target might be achievable, we need to deal with effects of climate change in the near future and in the longer term. This means that adaptation is necessary even if it is not easy to achieve. “In some cases it might be inexpensive, but in some cases it might be really costly” Irene Lorenzoni says in this video interview to CLISP. In which way adaptation strategies could affect our societies? “There are different facets of adaptation goals” Prof. Lorenzoni explains: “As individuals, we don’t necessarily have the freedom of choice to respond to climate change in any way that we might want to. We are constrained, to a certain extent, by the societal structures in which we operate”

    Interesting reading.
The attached site is very interesting, too.
I suggest to GPs' friends to watch the video inside, titled 'Lessons from The Ancient Earth', even if it looks a bit difficult (at least for my english knowledge) but the important thing is to understand the 'general meaning'.
    Thanks for sharing.

predefinito From the past to the future................

..... a lesson or a well architected teorema, unfortunately based only on words.
The video starts with a definition: the archeologists study the past, sometime thousand, sometime million years ago. Well, this is true.
Then a jump to the near past, less than ONE thousand year, and he discovers that some olde people disappared and he says that the modest warming was the cause of flood that destryed many old civilization. But this is the idea of Brian Fargan, unfortunately he is an archeologist and an antropologist, not a scientist; he is able to read the old past, and he may build forecast like ou and me.
If we like, we may read Giambattista Vico anh his teory of historica cycle, but cannot use the historic teory as a scientific teory.
It could be that in 10 or 20 years we may be boiled bya the GREAT WARMING Cycle or we will be frozen by the GREAT COOL, but until now neither serios scientist neither visionaires migth be able to preparea an acceptable forecast.
